Hands up if you have ever fallen short of a goal (for the record my hand is up as I type this). We all fall short of goals from time-to-time, it’s not nice but it happens. Yet there are some people who seem to make a habit of not succeeding, of always falling short. So why is that?
Failing to be Persistent: I have always believed that you never fail until you quit, so long as you are trying then you are achieving success to some degree. Success doesn’t come instantly, it takes time and effort, and the simple truth is most people are not consistent or persistent enough, they throw in the towel too easily. If you want to achieve great success you need to be prepared to work at it for a long time.
No Conviction: If you want to be successful you need to have a clear vision, you need to know what’s important to you and you need to do everything to the best of your ability. There is no use in doing things half-heartedly, because you’re going to get half-hearted results. Do everything to the best of your ability, even the small things, especially the small things, as they are what count.
Failing to Learn: We all make mistakes, we all fall short of our goals and we all suffer setbacks, that’s life. However, in such situations we have one of two choices, accept it for what it is, or see it as an opportunity to learn and develop. Most people fail to achieve because they don’t learn the lessons from mistakes along the way and usually end up repeating the same mistakes over and again.
Poor Discipline: Discipline comes down to being focused, which comes down to knowing what it is you need to do and why. Yet most people get easily distracted after five minutes, and then they forget what they were doing and before you know it they have wasted an entire morning. You will continually fail to achieve your goals if you have poor discipline. Have self-control, get the work done before you reward yourself.
Bad Attitude: Have you ever noticed that the people with the worst attitude are often the ones with the worst results? These are the people who think that to be successful you have to get lucky, and the reason why is it’s easier to blame a lack of luck for their situation than accept responsibility for their actions, or lack of as is often the case. Have a brilliant attitude to everything and know that you always have a choice to see things in a positive light.
All of the above are bad habits we fall in to, but that is not to say we can’t learn new habits, habits that will empower us and move us towards our goals. But as with all habits it comes down to discipline, we need to stay committed to developing positive behavioural habits. Respect yourself enough to want to make a positive change, to want to make a positive impact on your life and those of other people.
