On Saturday I spent the day photographing at the Tour du Mont Blanc, an event described as 'the world's toughest one day bike event'. At 330km long and with over 8000m of ascent this was an event that took every rider to their absolute limits, and beyond in some cases.
The climbs were relentless, and were hard to drive, and as I watched the looks of total focus and determination on the faces of those nearing the finish I couldn't help but admire the commitment riders were showing in order to achieve their goals. All started in the dark, at 5am, and many were finishing in the dark well past 10pm at night, yet despite the hardships they simply wouldn't be defeated.
Too often we set ourselves a goal, we set off on the journey but the moment the going gets tough we start to lose focus and we give in. That attitude won't get you anywhere in life or in your business. It's about having a laser-like focus on what you want to achieve, committing to doing whatever it takes and not relenting until you have achieved it.
I hate to break it to you but there are going to be times on the journey that you don't want to continue, when it would be easier to simply step aside and say 'at least I gave it a go'. But where would we be in life if we always took that attitude, what sort of message would that send to those around us in our businesses? For we are not only letting ourselves down, but all of those who look up to us and take inspiration from us.
As I stood at the finish watching riders come across the line their faces switched from the pain of what they had been through to sheer elation and joy at having finally achieved their goal. Every single rider knew that the hardships of the ride had been worth it, the hours of suffering faded away once the goal had been achieved. The same goes when building your business, it's always worth it when you achieve your goals.
So I urge you all to be committed, stay focused and never, ever give up.
